Install Proxmox VE for Beginners

Proxmox VE turns any spare PC into a server that runs many virtual machines and containers from a web page. Install it in about 15 minutes.

1. Get the installer

Download the Proxmox VE ISO from proxmox.com/downloads and write it to a USB stick with balenaEtcher or Rufus.

proxmox.com/downloads  ->  Proxmox VE ISO

2. Install

Boot the PC from the USB stick, choose Install Proxmox VE (Graphical), pick the target disk, set a root password and a static IP for the server.

3. Open the web interface

From another computer browse to https://SERVER-IP:8006 and log in as root. The certificate warning is normal on a home network.

https://192.168.1.50:8006

4. Use the free update channel

Without a subscription, switch to the no-subscription repository: node > Updates > Repositories, disable the enterprise repos and add No-Subscription. Then Updates > Refresh > Upgrade.

Node > Updates > Repositories > Add: No-Subscription

5. Create your first VM

Upload an ISO to local storage, then Create VM and follow the wizard.

local > ISO Images > Upload -> Create VM

FAQ

Do I need a subscription?

No. Proxmox VE is free; the subscription adds the enterprise repository and support.

What hardware do I need?

A 64-bit CPU with virtualization (Intel VT-x / AMD-V) enabled in the BIOS, 8 GB+ RAM and an SSD is a comfortable start.
