"You're Not Registered to Vote": The Election Scam Text the FBI Warned About

Ahead of the 2026 midterms the FBI warned about a text that says you're not registered to vote. Here is how it works and the safe way to check.

1. The text

A text or email says you are not registered to vote in your state and gives a link to fix it.

2. The fake page

The link opens a convincing but fake state voter registration page.

3. What it steals

Your name, address, date of birth and ID numbers, used for identity theft and more scams, according to the FBI.

4. Check the real way

Go to vote.gov or type your state election office's address yourself. Never use a link in a message.

5. Report it

Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM), then report it at ic3.gov or to your local FBI field office.

FAQ

Will my state text me about registration?

Some states send official notices, but always check at vote.gov or your state's site directly, not through the link.

I entered my details. What now?

Report it at ic3.gov and IdentityTheft.gov, and consider freezing your credit.
