4 Election Scams the FBI Flagged for the 2026 Midterms
The FBI's October 2026 warning lists four ways scammers use election season. Here is each one and how to protect yourself.
1. Campaign investment pools
Scammers promise a guaranteed return on a campaign "pool" that pays out if the candidate wins, and push you to recruit others. Donations never pay back.
2. Fake PACs
You think you're giving to a real political action committee, but the scammers keep it. Check committee filings at fec.gov; high consulting or admin costs are a warning sign.
3. Merch that never ships
Political merchandise is sold and paid for but never delivered. Check sellers on BBB.org first.
4. Fake registration texts
A text says you aren't registered and links to a fake state page that steals your details. Check at vote.gov.
5. Report it
Report to your local FBI field office or ic3.gov with names, numbers, websites and how you paid.
