Caller ID Says FBI? How the Spoofed Federal Agent Scam Works
On November 2, 2026 the FBI warned that scammers are faking its own field office phone numbers. Here is how the scam works and how to check a call for real.
1. A real number on your screen
Scammers spoof the phone numbers of real FBI field offices, so your caller ID shows a genuine FBI number.
2. Real names, fake agents
They use real and fictitious agent names from the FBI, DEA and Secret Service. One even joined a video call in front of a fake federal office.
3. What they want
Money or personal information, often paid by prepaid card, cryptocurrency or a courier. The FBI says real officers never ask for any of these.
4. How to check
Hang up, look up the agency's public number yourself, and call it. Never use a number the caller gives you. For the FBI, call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
5. Report it
Save screenshots of video calls for tips.fbi.gov, tell your bank if you paid anything, and file a complaint at ic3.gov.
