Find Your BitLocker Recovery Key (and Back It Up)

A BitLocker recovery screen after an update, a BIOS change or a new part is scary, but the key is usually saved to your Microsoft account. Here is where to find it, and how to back it up before you ever need it.

1. Personal PC: check your Microsoft account

On another phone or computer, sign in at the address below with the Microsoft account used on that PC.

account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey

2. Match the Key ID

The blue recovery screen shows a Key ID. Pick the key with the same ID and type the 48-digit recovery key.

3. Work or school PC

Your IT team can look the key up in Microsoft Entra ID, Intune or Active Directory. Give them the Key ID from the screen.

4. Back it up while the PC still works

Open Terminal as administrator and run the command below. Save the Numerical Password somewhere off the laptop: a password manager, a printout or your Microsoft account. You can also use Control Panel > BitLocker Drive Encryption > Back up your recovery key.

manage-bde -protectors -get C:

FAQ

Can Microsoft unlock my drive without the key?

No. Without the recovery key the data on an encrypted drive cannot be recovered. That is why the backup in step 4 matters.

Why did BitLocker ask for the key out of nowhere?

Firmware or BIOS updates, changing boot settings, Secure Boot changes or moving the drive to another PC can all trigger recovery. After you unlock it once, it usually goes back to normal.
