Mesh Wi-Fi vs a Single Router: Which Do You Need?

Mesh Wi-Fi uses several units to cover a big or multi-floor home with one network name. A single good router is enough for apartments and small homes.

Single router

Small home or apartment, router in a central spot: one good router is cheaper and fastest.

Mesh

Multi-floor homes, thick walls or dead zones: a mesh system covers it with one network name.

Placement

Put satellites halfway between the router and the dead zone, not inside it, and up off the floor.

Wired backhaul

If you can run an Ethernet cable between mesh units, do it: it's much faster than wireless links.

FAQ

Are extenders the same as mesh?

No. Extenders create a second network and often halve speed; mesh units work as one system.

Do I need Wi-Fi 7?

Only if your devices support it. Coverage matters more than the newest standard.
