Change Your Wi-Fi Password (and Reset Your Router)

Change your Wi-Fi password from the router's settings page, and factory-reset it when you're locked out.

1. Find the router's address

Windows: ipconfig, look at Default Gateway. iPhone: Settings > Wi-Fi > (i) > Router.

ipconfig # Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

2. Log in

Open that address in a browser and sign in with the admin login (often on the router label or in the provider's app).

http://192.168.1.1

3. Change the Wi-Fi password

Wireless / Wi-Fi settings > set WPA2 or WPA3 and a long password > Save. Reconnect your devices.

Wi-Fi > Security: WPA3 > Password > Save

4. Locked out? Reset

With the router on, hold the Reset button 10-30 seconds. It returns to the defaults printed on its label.

Hold Reset 10-30 s

FAQ

My provider has an app for this.

Many do (for example Xfinity, Spectrum, Verizon apps); use it instead of the web page.

Will a reset delete my settings?

Yes, all custom settings. Write down your provider's login details first.
