Self-Host a Password Manager With Vaultwarden

Vaultwarden is a lightweight server compatible with the official Bitwarden apps. Host your own password vault.

1. Run it

One container; keep the data folder backed up.

docker run -d --name vaultwarden -v ./vw-data:/data -p 8000:80 \
  --restart unless-stopped vaultwarden/server:latest

2. Put it behind HTTPS

The web vault requires HTTPS. Use Nginx Proxy Manager, Caddy or a Cloudflare Tunnel with your domain.

vault.yourdomain.com  ->  :8000

3. Create your account, then close sign-ups

Register at your URL, then restart with SIGNUPS_ALLOWED=false so nobody else can.

-e SIGNUPS_ALLOWED=false

4. Use the Bitwarden apps

In any Bitwarden app choose Self-hosted and enter your URL.

Bitwarden app > Self-hosted > https://vault.yourdomain.com

FAQ

Is self-hosting safer than Bitwarden's cloud?

Not automatically. You become responsible for HTTPS, updates and backups. Bitwarden's free cloud plan is a fine choice too.

What must I back up?

The vw-data folder (it holds the database and attachments).
